Phonemic Awareness

Level 2 Test

Blend Three to Five Phonemes MODEL:  I will say the sounds in a word, and then you blend the sounds together to say the word. If I say the sounds /d//r// ı¯/, the blended word you would say is dry. Let’s start. /p//a//d/ (pad) /s//p//e//l/ (spell) /d//r//e¯//m/ (dream) /s//w//i//m//z/ (swims) Segment Words with Blends and Count Sounds MODEL:  I will say a word, and then you say each sound and count the sounds. For example, if I say most, the sounds are /m//o¯ //s//t/. I raise a finger for each sound (demonstrate this as you speak): /m/, /o¯ /, /s/, /t/. Most has four sounds. Now it’s your turn. tray (/t//r//a¯/, 3) sniff (/s//n//i//f/, 4) help (/h//e//l//p/, 4) fast (/f//a//s//t/, 4) Delete Phonemes MODEL:  I am going to ask you to take a sound away from a word. I’ll do two first. If I say same without /s/, the new word is aim. If I say card without /d/, the new word is car. • Say fall without /f/. (all) • Say place without /p/. (lace) • Say clip without /k/. (lip) • Say hurt without /t/. (her) • Say tense without /s/. (ten) • Say gold without /d/. (goal) Add Phonemes MODEL:  I am going to ask you to add a sound to a word. Here’s how to do it. If I add /m/ to the beginning of ice, I make the word mice. If I add /t/ to the end of way, I make wait. • Add /m/ to the beginning of old. (mold) • Add /t/ to the end of bill. (built) • Add /p/ to the beginning of rinse. (prince) • Add /k/ to the end of hull. (hulk) • Add /g/ to the beginning of rate. (great) • Add /n/ to the end of shy. (shine) Change Phonemes MODEL:  I am going to ask you to change sounds in words. I’ll show you how. If I change /v/ in van to /p/, I make the word pan. If I change /a/ in hat to /i/, I make the word hit. • Change /t/ in torn to /b/. (born) • Change /b/ in brown to /f/. (frown) • Change /d/ in held to /p/. (help) • Change /ch/ in bench to /d/. (bend) • Change /u/ in cluck to /i/. (click) • Change /e/ in said to /e¯/. (seed) Distinguish Short Vowels from Long Vowels MODEL:  I will say three words, and you tell me which two words have the same middle sound. I’ll do the first one. The three words are mad, track, and sail. The words mad and track have the same middle sound.
