Phonemic Awareness

Level 1 Test

Syllables in Words MODEL: A word is made of parts called syllables. For example, the word chicken has two syllables, chick•en. To say the word, we blend the syllables together without stopping. I will say some syllables, like chick•en. Then you blend them together to say the word: chicken. Make the words from the syllables I say. cos•tume bas•ket jag•uar mu•sic scoo•ter pitch•er Blend Two to Four Phonemes MODEL: I will say the sounds in a word, and then you blend the sounds together to say the word. If I say the sounds /r//i//p/, the blended word you would say is rip. Let’s start. /a¯ //j/ (age) /b//i//g/ (big) /h//o//p/ (hop) /r//ü//l/ (rule) /d//r//e//s/ (dress) Segment and Count Two to Four Phonemes MODEL: I will say a word, and you say each sound and count the sounds. For example, I will say go. The sounds are /g//o¯ /. I raise a finger for each sound: /g/ raise one finger /o¯ / raise another finger. There are two sounds in go. Now it’s your turn. as (/a//z/, 2) sky (/s//k// ı¯/, 3) mix (/m//i//ks/, 3) new (/n//ü/, 2) rush (/r//u//sh/, 3) Segment Words with Blends and Count Sounds MODEL: I will say a word, and you say each sound and count the sounds. For example, I will say flat. The sounds are /f//l//a//t/. I raise a finger for each sound (demonstrate this as you speak): /f/, /l/, /a/, /t/. There are four sounds in flat. Now it’s your turn. blow (/b//l//o¯ /, 3) trick (/t//r//i//k/, 4) smile (/s//m// ı¯//l/, 4) desk (/d//e//s//k/, 4) shelf (/sh//e//l//f/, 4)
