Distinguish Long Vowels from Short Vowels MODEL:  I will say three words, and you tell me which two words have the same middle sound. For example, if I say the three words whale, sand, and shave, the words whale and shave have the same middle sound. For example, I could say the words chance, think, and choose. The words chance and choose start with the same sound. I could say wrong, with, and sing. The words wrong and sing end with the same sound. For each word set below, ask students to tell you which two words have the same beginning or final sound. Initial: show, champ, sure thin, chill, through shape, chalk, chest Final: flash, mush, much clip, cling, hang rich, tooth, slouch Distinguish Among Vowel Sounds (R-controlled, Diphthongs, /u˙ /, /o˙ /) MODEL:  I will say three words, and you tell me which two words have the same middle sound. For example, the word kitchen has two syllables, kitch•en. We usually stress one syllable more than the others. The stressed syllable has the strongest sound.
