Language Central Song Book Routines Preview/Review Concept Routines • Use the song as an active listening tool to preview or review the lesson concept. Before playing the song, ask simple lead-in questions to give a purpose for listening. Play the song and have children listen to answer your questions. Play the song again to clarify their understanding. Preview Concept Example: This is a song called Fun with Friends. What are some fun things you do with friends? Have children list different kinds of things they like to do with friends. After listening ask: What fun things to do with friends did you hear in the song? (play; play hide and seek) Review Concept Example: Yesterday, we listened to a song about having fun with friends. What are some fun things you can do with friends? Have children compare their answers before and after listening to the song. Provide sentence frames to scaffold language. Examples: is fun. I like to with my friends. • Use the song to review the lesson concept and weekly question. At the beginning or end of the class, sing the song together. Then have children tell how the song is related to the question of the week, using lesson vocabulary. Vocabulary Routines • Review lesson vocabulary by having children illustrate the song with their own drawings or rebus symbols that convey meaning. • Use the song to review the lesson vocabulary words. Play the song and have children pantomime the words or raise their hands when they hear the vocabulary words as they listen. Review the meanings of the words and then sing the song together. • Play the song, stopping before each vocabulary word appears. Display the word cards. Have pairs try to pick the word that comes next. Then children can listen to the song and clarify their answers. Sing the song together. • Have children use the Song Book illustrations to talk about the weekly vocabulary. Sounds and Letters Routines • Use the song as an active listening tool to review a phonics/phonemic awareness/letter recognition skill that children need to practice. Have children stand, sit, put thumbs up, thumbs down, or clap to identify sounds or words.
