WISR for Multilingual Learners and Newcomers

Second-language acquisition is learning a second language after a first language is already established. It builds upon the first language and incorporates the elements of a new language, such as vocabulary, phonological components (hearing the sounds in words), grammatical structures, and writing systems. To help create language-rich opportunities for ML students, all of these elements should be integrated into each lesson. By integrating the skills of Writing, Inquiry, Speaking & Listening, and Reading & Viewing (WISR) into each lesson, teachers facilitate quality interactions critical for navigating and accessing both a new language and grade-level content as well as developing new ideas. Below are strategies and resources to ensure access to these opportunities for learners. Writing: Provide opportunities for students to explore and internalize learning through short writing tasks to process key concepts or ideas. These strategies may include: graphic organizers, sentence and/or paragraph frames. Graphic Organizers help students process and organize information, aiding in vocabulary development, comprehension, and writing. They make learning accessible and engaging by providing: Visual Support: Amplifies processing of new vocabulary and grammar structures Structure and Organization: Breaks complex topics into manageable parts Vocabulary Development: Links words and concepts for better understanding Comprehension Support: Highlights main ideas, details, and relationships Writing Reference: Helps brainstorm, organize, and plan writing tasks that students Teacher Moves Student Moves Resource(s)
