Grading Considerations for Multilingual Learners
When evaluating student work, it is crucial to adopt a holistic approach. Multilingual Learners are in the process of developing their English language skills while adjusting to a whole new culture and environment. Therefore, the evaluation should go beyond solely focusing on their verbal and written abilities. It is essential to acknowledge that students might have a deeper understanding of the content than what they can articulate through speech or writing. Every student deserves equitable access and opportunities that highlight their strengths and talents while fulfilling a comprehensive evaluation.
Consider the following when evaluating student proficiency and before assigning failing grades:
ALLOW VARIED MEANS TO DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING
ADJUST GRADING CRITERIA
PROVIDE PROACTIVE SUPPORT
Students in the country for less than one year may receive a pass/fail grade OR may earn a letter grade. For students who are a WIDA level 2 or higher, base grades on academic performance instead of pass/fail. Evaluate students with a grade that includes student engagement, regular attendance, and effort. Completion of work less than your school’s requirement warrants further evaluation with counselors, administrators, and/or Alternative Language Services (ALS) mentors.
Encourage students to showcase their understanding through a variety of ways, such as videos, presentations, or incorporating their home language. Focus on meeting success criteria using varied assessment methods, while considering individual student preferences and needs. Utilize WIDA Can Do Statements to determine suitable approaches for assessing proficiency.
Ensure the student has been provided re-teaching opportunities and resources like vocabulary lists, study guides, presentation slides, daily handouts or notes, etc... Involve parents or guardians, instructional coaches, counselors, administrators, and ALS mentors/ facilitators.
