Best Practices for Grading Practice Work OVERVIEW

Practice work refers to tasks or formative assessments that help solidify student knowledge and understanding of content standards and skills. They are designed to align with student capabilities and levels of language proficiency. Practice work can occur during or outside of class time and includes necessary language supports or scaffolds to ensure students can effectively engage with the material. RATIONALE Practice work provides opportunity for teachers to check for student understanding of content standards and skills as students prepare, practice and reflect on their learning.

Outdated Practice

Practice work is directly aligned to content standards and support the learning intention and success criteria.

Practice work is not aligned to content standards when students are given activities that do not support the learning intention and success criteria.

Tailor practice work to specifically address the linguistic and educational needs. Ensure all materials are accessible and inclusive, providing multiple means of expression and engagement to accommodate various learning and communication styles. Integrate supports such as visual aids, graphic organizers, multilingual glossaries, and alternative texts to facilitate understanding and engagement.

When students are expected to complete practice work individually, the student is able to complete the work with scaffolds in place.

Students are not provided the necessary scaffolds to complete work independently.

Timely and specific feedback is provided to students on all practice work.

No feedback is provided to students on the practice work assigned.

Offer feedback that is more frequent and individualized to accommodate varying proficiency levels and learning needs.
