Student does not want to talk: Use”drive by” moments (passing time, lining up, entry routines). Use comments instead of questions to reduce pressure (e.g., “I noticed you are into. . . .”). You miss a day: Restart. Consistency matters. Student pushes back or seems annoyed: Pull back to 30-60 seconds; keep it casual. Shift to shared tasks (e.g., asking them to help with something). Student behavior is not improving: Continue relationship work but add additional supports.
