Phonemic Awareness

Level 3 Test

Segment and Count Phonemes Model:  I am going to say a word. Then I’ll ask you to say each sound in the word and count the sounds on your fingers. I’ll show you how. The word is treat . I’ll say the sounds and hold up one finger for each sound. Raise a finger as you say each sound: /t//r//eˉ//t/. I counted four sounds in treat . Now it’s your turn. sky (/s//k//ıˉ/, 3) break (/b//r//aˉ //k/, 4) slick (/s//l//i//k/, 4) twin (/t//w//i//n/, 4) calf (/k//a//f/, 3) stretch (/s//t//r//e//ch/, 5) Delete Phonemes Model:  I am going to ask you to take a sound away from a word. I’ll do two first. If I say neat without /n/, the new word is eat . If I say mail without /l/, the new word is may . • Say clap without /k/. (lap) • Say fright without /f/. (right) • Say sway without /s/. (way) • Say mist without /t/. (miss) • Say word without /d/. (were) • Say find without /d/. (fine) Add Phonemes Model:  I am going to ask you to add a sound to a word. I’ll show you how. If I add /r/ to the beginning of ice , I make the word rice . If I add /d/ to the end of car , I make card . • Add /t/ to the beginning of wig . (twig) • Add /d/ to the end of while . (wild) • Add /g/ to the beginning of rain . (grain) • Add /t/ to the end of pan . (pant) • Add /s/ to the beginning of mile . (smile) • Add /f/ to the end of shell . (shelf) Change Phonemes Model:  I am going to ask you to change sounds in words. I’ll show you how. If I change /v/ in van to /p/, I make the word pan . If I change /a/ in hat to /i/, I make the word hit . • Change /b/ in brown to /k/. (crown) • Change /t/ in turn to /b/. (burn) • Change /d/ in held to /p/. (help) • Change /ch/ in bench to /d/. (bend) • Change /e/ in said to /eˉ/. (seed) • Change /u/ in cluck to /o/. (clock) Identify Long and Short Vowels Model:  I will say three words, and you tell me which two words have the same middle sound. I’ll do the first one. The three words are fine , pin , and mine . The words fine and mine have the same middle sound.
