Phonemic Awareness

Level 2 Test

Syllables in Words Model:  A word is made of parts called syllables . For example, the word music has two syllables, mu•sic. To say the word, we blend the syllables together without stopping. I will say some syllables, like mu•sic. Then you blend them together to say the word: music . Make the words from the syllables I say. con•test rab•bit nap•kin mid•night tu•lip o•pen Compare Sounds Model:  I will say three words, and you will tell me which two words have the same sound. First we’ll compare beginning sounds. Then we’ll compare final sounds. I might say the words bell , dark , and desk . The words dark and desk start with the same sound, /d/. For each word set below, ask children to tell you which two words have the same beginning or final sound. Initial: ten, tip, bug look, bowl, late pink, friend, pat Final: room, red, mud sip, bag, rug bell, safe, doll Isolate Sounds Model:  I will say a word. Then you and I will say it together. After that, I’ll ask you to tell me one of the sounds in the word. For example, I’ll say the word yes , and we’ll say it together: yes . What is the beginning sound? It is /y/, yes . For each word set below, have children say the word with you before identifying the specific sound. Initial: mice (/m/) gate (/g/) cold (/k/) part (/p/) dark (/d/) Final: dress (/s/) win (/n/) wave (/v/) laugh (/f/) deer (/r/) Blend Phonemes Model:  I will say the sounds in a word, and then you blend the sounds together to say the word. If I say the sounds /b//e//d/, the blended word you would say is bed . Let’s start. /p//a//t/ (pat) /j//o//g/ (jog) /a//z/ (as) /sh//oˉ/ (show) Segment and Count Phonemes Model:  I will say a word, and you say each sound and count the sounds. For example, I will say pie . The sounds are /p//ıˉ/. I raise a finger for each sound: /p/ raise one finger /ıˉ/ raise another finger. There are two sounds in pie . Now it’s your turn. ray (/r//aˉ /, 2) if (/i//f/, 2) odd (/o//d/, 2) blue (/b//l//ü/, 3)
