Small Group Manual 2019-2020

• Give students the song lyrics. Have students circle all the vocabulary words and review the words’ definitions with a partner.

Grammar Routines • After the lesson, have students find examples of the week’s grammar skill as they listen to the song. Example: Listen for subject pronouns. Then identify the noun they take the place of. Example: Dolphins are aquatic animals. They communicate with each other. ( They is a subject pronoun for dolphins.) Listen again and identify any other examples they might have missed. Example: Listen for contractions. Contractions combine two words with an apostrophe. Example: “You look for any fingerprints, Yes, they’re a helpful clue.” (they’re) Are there any words in this song you could combine to form contractions? (“If you are a detective” could change to “If you’re a detective.”) Sing the song together and identify any other examples they hear. • Give students the song lyrics. Have students find examples of the week’s grammar skill as they read the song lyrics. Example:  Circle each pronoun and draw an arrow to the noun it is replacing. • Make a cloze version of the song lyrics, leaving blank lines where grammar skill words should be (for example, verbs). Provide a word bank if necessary. Have pairs try to place the words in the appropriate blanks. Then children can listen to the song and clarify their answers. Sing the song together. • Use the song as an active listening tool to review the phonics/phonemic awareness/letter recognition skill that children need to practice. Have students stand, sit, put thumbs up, thumbs down, or clap to identify sounds or words. • Have students find rhyming words in the song. Example:  Coming to a new land, it may seem too unusual, there’s so much to understand! • Play or read the song, and stop where there should be a rhyming word. Have students say the word that is missing. Listen to the song again to clarify their answers. Phonics/Phonemic Awareness/ Letter Recognition Routines
