Oral Language Activity: Help students become confdent in explaining their work by having them work in small groups and describing their answers as being the same as or different from the answers of other

members of the group. For Convince Me in Lesson 4-2 For Convince Me!, have students work in small groups with counters. Give each student 17 counters and give them time to

work individually to answer the question. Then have students take turns showing and telling their answers. After the frst student has given his or her answer, the other students in the group say whether their answers are the same or different. If their answers are the same, those students tell their answers in their own words. If their answers are different, those students explain their answers to show how they are different. Students pull a number card (Teaching Tool 3) from the pile. They will then tell, draw or write a number that is more or less than the number pulled from the pile. A variation could be to do 1 more/1 less or 2 more/2 less.
