Welcome & Greet
Ensure newcomers feels welcome and safe. Greet them and learn how to pronounce their names. Learn something about their interests and backgrounds. Understand what languages are spoken at home. Use I Speak Statements .
Federal & State Programs provides student flip books that have common phrases in a student’s home language. The Teacher Question Flipbook in English has a pronunciation guide for translating to a student's home language. To request flip books, call FS Programs (801) 826-5111.
Use Question Flip Books
Clarify content and language. However, not all texts need to be translated, nor is there availability for translation of whole textbooks. Students may translate key words and phrases using Google Translate or Microsoft Bing Translator. Most topics they are learning are new to all students. Not all terms are directly translatable so scaffolds like visuals and labels provide context and support. Refer to the Knowledge Base Article: How to Leverage the Home Language. Engage newcomers in opportunities for low pressure speaking and writing activities. For example, in secondary, bell activities may include sentence frames with word banks for prompts and/or a summary of the day’s lesson or reading in the student’s home language. Refer to the Instructional Playbook Toolkit for specific strategies to support MLs.
