Artificial Intelligence

What is AI and how does it work? “Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a branch of computer science aimed at creating machines that mimic human intelligence...like understanding language, recognizing patterns, or making decisions” (ISTE, 2024b). AI has the potential to impact many areas of education, including: enhancing individualized support for teacher productivity, providing personalized learning, and improving the quality of learning and assessment. How can AI be used safely and effectively? There are multiple types of AI, each of which utilize a vast dataset to make decisions. AI has the potential to positively impact many fields because of the amount of data it can synthesize. In contrast, there is also a potential for bias and misinformation if the dataset is not accurate or equitable. Any tool with AI must be utilized for educational practices that are aligned with CSD’s MTSS Framework and instructional priorities, and approved through CSD’s LearnPlatform to ensure data privacy. How can I best use AI for myself and for my students? The key is to utilize AI in a way that empowers learners and redefine your teaching in new ways. AI has the potential to be used for personalized learning, providing feedback, brainstorming lesson ideas, create instructional materials, and increase educator efficiency. To help prepare students to be college and career ready, use the VIEW: V alue of Understanding - Teach AI fundamentals by using common definitions and information on AI processes to share with students. Utilize AI resources to support your own learning. I mplementing Safely - Support digital citizenship practices by encouraging responsible online behavior and how to be a digital citizen when using AI. E ducational Learning - Teach about how AI does not replace human skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, empathy, and adaptability; but how to partner with AI to use these uniquely human skills to empower student strengths and productivity. W orld Preparation - Continue to engage and learn about AI to ensure that you are sharing accurate and relevant information with students.
