DE-ESCALATION

Help–Prompt–Wait (HPW) is a low intensity classroom adjustment designed to reduce frustration, increase independence, and prevent behavior escalation by providing students with the right amount of support at the right time.

The precision request protocol structures communication with the student in a concise, predictable, respectful format that preserves adult authority and increases the likelihood of student compliance. Adults give directions calling the students name, then using a “Please” and “ I Need” structure, followed by wait time, then specific

feedback and/or consequences.
