Critical Actions for Educators The STOIC Framework

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, prevention-based framework designed to create safe, predictable, and positive learning environments where all students can succeed. Rather than reacting to problem behavior, PBIS focuses on creating the conditions that help students meet behavioral expectations and engage successfully in learning. When students struggle with behavior, STOIC helps us focus on what adjustments can be made. Instead of asking, “What should the student do differently?” we ask, “What can I change to support student success?” By revisiting Structure , Teach, Observe, Interact, and Correct , teachers can make small, intentional shifts, like refining routines, reteaching expectations, or increasing supervision, that prevent and reduce misbehavior while creating a more positive, predictable classroom.
