Overview: The Three Reads routine is a structured reading approach that guides students through a deeper exploration of mathematical concepts and problems. Students engage, analyze and work to solve problems collaboratively with each read. Instructional Purpose: To enhance comprehension of mathematical problems, enabling students to identify key elements and articulate their understanding of the problem context, mathematical language, and structure Materials/Set-Up: Select mathematical problems or word problems suitable for the class level ahead of time Instructional Steps: 1. Introduce the Three Reads Routine: Explain the purpose and benefits of the routine to students. Outline the three steps: Comprehension, Language Analysis, and Problem Structure. 2. Model the First Read (Understanding): Choose a mathematical problem and read it aloud. Guide students to summarize the context without using numbers or mathematical terms. Discuss their observations and focus on what is happening in the scenario. 3. Conduct the Second Read (Analyzing Language): Read the same problem again, emphasizing the mathematical language. Encourage students to identify key terms and phrases, discussing the problem's structure. Ask guiding questions to help them analyze how the problem is framed. 4. Facilitate the Third Read (Problem Structure): Have students examine the problem in-depth, identifying the mathematical elements and relationships. Discuss their findings in small groups, promoting collaborative problem-solving. 5. Wrap-Up: Reflect on the routine as a class, discussing how it helped them understand the problem better. Encourage students to apply the Three Reads routine to future mathematical problems.
