Collaborative Poster

Overview Students create a poster that reflects the gist of a text or topic. There are 3 parts to this strategy: individual and group reflection, creation of a poster as a team, and presentation of the poster to the class As they work through the strategy, it is important EACH STUDENT has time to reflect/process individually on how they can collectively represent the core message of the text. Then in small groups, EACH STUDENT presents their ideas and the group comes to consensus or an agreement of roles and what to include on the poster. Instructional Purpose By engaging in quality interactions like the Collaborative Poster strategy students use text-based, dialogue, gain access to rigorous text, and share their understandings referencing the text all while develop or enhance their language skills in all modes of communication: reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Materials/Set-Up

Text for reading Poster paper/chart paper 4 different colored markers per group

Collaborative Poster Rubric Tape/sticky tack for display Desks arranged in groups of 4

Instructional Steps 1.Students read a text and individually reflect on how to represent its core message. 2.In groups, students share ideas in a whip-around and come to consensus on an image, quote, and original phrase. 3.Each student contributes using one assigned marker color and completes their designated role. 4.Groups create a collaborative poster and prepare a presentation. 5.Groups present and explain their poster to the class.

Justify poster choices using multiple pieces of evidence. Elaborate on how the image, quote, and phrase represent the text's central message.

Use visuals, gestures, home language, and partner support to discuss ideas. Select a quote from highlighted options. Write labels, words, or simple phrases to the poster.

Use sentence frames and word banks to explain poster choices. Contribute short phrases and simple explanations.

Explain poster choices using complete sentences. Cite evidence from the text and contribute original ideas.
