Solution Brainstorming

Goal: Understand the overall scenario without focusing on numbers. Focus: What is happening in the scenario? Example Response A family is planning a visit to a museum, and they need to buy tickets for members of their family. The museum charges different prices for adults, seniors, and kids, but kids under 12 months are free.

Goal: Analyze the mathematical language and structure. Focus: How is the mathematical situation structured? Example Response T he problem has different prices for adult, child, and senior tickets. The number of tickets needed for each one is also given. We have to calculate the cost on this information.

Goal: Brainstorm mathematical methods to solve the problem. Focus: How can the problem be solved mathematically? Example Response: Let’s multiply the number of tickets for each category by the corresponding ticket price, and then add the totals together to find the overall cost.

Example 2: Values/Units Chart with Text Annotation

Example Problem You are planning a visit to the Gateway Children's Museum in Salt Lake City. Adult tickets cost 13.50 each, child tickets cost 12.50 each, and senior tickets cost 12.50 each. Children under 12 months can enter for free. Your family consists of 2 adults, 2 children (over 12 months), and 1 senior. Write an expression to calculate the total cost for your family's visit to the museum.

1st Read Comprehension

Underline words/phrases representing values or amounts. Students list numbers, unknowns, and variables in the "Values" column. 2nd Read Language Analysis Write the meaning of each value in context. Students complete the "Units" column with descriptions related to the problem. 3rd Read Solution Brainstorming Create mathematical expressions using only the descriptions in the "Units" column. Students work in pairs to form expressions, refining their language as needed.
