(RL) WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly and follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Play Two Truths and a Lie with students. Allow students to go a few rounds and then you do an example. Make your lie a large hyperbole such as: ●​ I swam the English Channel so fast that my hair was dry before the boats even caught up to me ●​ I ate so much pizza the owner of Little Caesar’s got to retire early ●​ I have had a million cavities!

Ask students how they were able to recognize your lie. Discussion should lead to the concept of exaggerating. Introduce the vocabulary word hyperbole.

OBJECTIVE Say: Today we are looking at a specific type of story called a Tall Tale. Tall Tales come from all over the world and the United States has a long history of great Tall Tales. Tall Tales are filled with hyperbole.

Display “I can” objective and read to students.

Say: We are going to start by reading a story and you will use a checklist to determine if it is a tall tale or not. Let’s take a look at the check list. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Look/Listen for Evidence Distribute the Tall Tale Checklist. Instruct students that we will use this checklist to determine if the book we are reading is a tall tale or not. Read/view selected tall tale using best practices. Allow pauses for students to discuss the checklist and record evidence from the book. After reading, review the checklist with students, allow them to share evidence, and determine if the selected book was a tall tale. 183
