Say: There is so much media in the world, and you all thought of great examples. Today we are going to be searching for specific elements of media that make up its message. We are going to take a deep dive look at how advertisements are made to be persuasive.
Display “I can” objective.
Say: That’s our “I can…” for today. You will know you’ve got it when you can design a persuasive ad of your own using elements of media.
DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Investigate Advertisements
Say: First let’s discover some elements of media used to make messages. I’m going to show you an ad and it’s your job to look closely and think about: what is the message and how did the creator make that message?
Show Ad #1 - John Cena Read poster
Say: What is the message of this ad? What do you see? What makes you say that? What else do you see?
Students should notice John Cena, a famous person, the inclusion of a famous book, the use of the color red, the size of the font “Read” and that it is all capitalized. Restate what students see. Add any observations they miss.
Say: Those elements make up the message of this ad. Let’s try another one. This time we will be watching a commercial.
Play Ad #2 - Robinson’s Fruit Shoot, It’s My Thing
Say: What is the message of this ad? What do you see? What makes you say that? What do you hear? How does that impact you? Students should notice the energetic music, the multiple kinds of activities children are doing, children represent multiple races, ethnicities, and genders. Children are all beautiful people. The font is large and fast paced. The video uses cuts and camera angles to make action more exciting.
Say: Those elements all work together to make the message of this ad. Let’s try one more. This
