time we will listen to a radio ad.
Play Ad #3 - Pizza Hut World Cup Say: What is the message of this ad? What did you hear? What makes you say that? How did it impact you? What did you notice? Students should notice the different tones of voice and pace. They should notice offers of rewards for advertised behaviors. They should notice that the ad is trying to be funny.
Step 2: Make a list of observed media elements Say: Your observations make up the elements of this ad that create a message. All ads are persuasive. Let’s make a list of all of the elements we have observed today.
Make a list of elements on the whiteboard with student input. ● Celebrity endorsements ● Rewards/Consequences ● Lifestyle appeal ● Humor
● Physical appeal ● Jingles/Slogans ● Pace
● Volume ● Emotion Step 3: Students create an advertisement for the library
Say: You will show your learning today by creating a poster ad for the library. To create an ad you must use three different elements of media to persuade your audience, students, to borrow more books from the library. Lead students through the instructions. We will have 15 minutes to finish our work today so you will need to work quickly. I expect you to be on task and use our supplies appropriately. Review positive and negative consequences. Pair students, distribute materials, and release for individual work. Circulate and assist students as necessary.
Bring everyone back together. If time allows, have students share work. Gather work. You may choose to display some student work.
Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES, & DISMISSAL
