1st grade : front cover, back cover, title, author, illustrator, pages, copyright page. 2nd grade : front cover, back cover, jacket, title, author, illustrator, pages, copyright page, spine, endpapers.
Whiteboard Enough books for several small groups of students to handle (1 per group) Post-it notes cut into small strips with parts of the book already written – see vocabulary–for each group. Choose one book to read aloud per grade: ● Isabel and her Colores go to school by Alexandra Alessandri ● The Pirates are Coming by John Condon ● Saturday by Oge Mora ● Our Pool by Lucy Ruth Cummins ● The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat
Author - the person who wrote the words of a text
Illustrator - the person(s) who created the pictures in a book Cover - the front and back part of the book that shows what the book is about with pictures and a title Dust Jacket - a protective outer cover for a book, often made of paper or a similar material
Title - the name of a book
Pages - the paper inside the covers
Copyright page - a section usually at the front of a published book that lists its publication, legal, copyright, and printing details Spine - the edge that holds the pages together and shows the title when the book is on a shelf Endpapers - the pages glued on the inside of the front and back covers of a hardback book
