Elementary Library

Tell students that they will be learning about the different parts of a book in today’s lesson. Ask them if they know any parts of a book off the top of their head, and jot them down on the whiteboard.

OBJECTIVE Display objective and read aloud.

Say: Our goal for learning today is to be able to identify the parts of a book. We will read a story and then practice identifying different parts of a book together. After that, you will work in small groups to practice.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Model

Read a book with the discussion guide. After reading, go through the book and point to and label each of the parts of the book, explaining what they are as you go and why they are important. Encourage students to think about whether this book is fiction or nonfiction. Step 2: Book Parts Labeling Group or pair students and have them follow along using a model book. Ask them to place their finger on each part of the book as it is shown during the teacher demonstration. Have students repeat the name of each book part as you demonstrate. Pass out prepared labels and have students work together to identify these 8 parts. For non-reading students, you may need to show one label at a time and read what it says so that students can identify the right label and then work on identifying that part of the book with their partner/group. Optional Step 3: Read Aloud & Practice Read a book with the discussion guide. As you read, ask students to verbally label each of the parts of the book, explaining what they are as you go and why they are important. Encourage students to think about whether this book is fiction or nonfiction. Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. Remind students of circulation procedures as necessary and dismiss for circulation procedures. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL As you are checking out books, point to different parts of the book and ask the student what it is called. Resource & Discussion Guide Ask students to clean up supplies appropriately.
