Content Standards: Standard 5.G.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and all squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
Standard 5.G.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
End of Unit Competency
By the end of Topic 16 students will be able to explain how triangles and quadrilaterals can be described, classified, and named.
Language Functions and Features: Describe data and/or steps to solve problems using: ● Mathematical terms ( classify, construct, sides, angles, equilateral, triangle, isosceles, scalene, right, acute, obtuse, trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, quadrilateral ) ● Visuals ( drawings, diagrams ) to support classification and/or extract information ● Observations ( notice, it appears, looks like ) and comparative language ( different from, similar to, the same as )) to share results (eg. The two figures are the same because.. .)
