Function: Attention, Escape
BEHAVIOR CONTRACT Behavior contracts offer advantages such as cost-effectiveness and flexibility for designing individualized interventions. In addition, they provide structure, allow for the establishment of clear expectations, and can be extended across settings; most often it is a strategy used with an individual child who is at-risk, has an emotional or behavior disorder, or has already been in trouble or suspended for behavior issues. Implementation Examples:
Contract trackers include schedule, goals, success indicator, clear criteria for success and menu of rewards that match student preference assessment.
Implementation Guidelines:
●
Clearly state the behavioral expectations
●
Incorporate rewards for adhering to the contract Define punishers for not meeting agreed upon expectations Include a home component to make the contract maximally effective Involve the student in the writing/ development of the contract; buy-in increases effectiveness Utilize behavior momentum, start with skills the student has and build upon their success. Don’t tackle the hardest behavior first. Modify the contract if either party is unhappy or the contract is not working as planned

Fidelity Check: ❏
Define target behavior (to decrease) Define desired behavior (to increase)
❏ ❏ ❏
Identify reinforcers and create a menu so student knows
●
Identify/assign adult staff to monitor contract
❏ Schedule check-ins at necessary frequency (high at first, fade as criteria are met) ❏ Include baseline data to measure growth ❏ Explain/teach contract positively ❏ Establish criteria for student meeting goal ❏ Sign contract (student and adult) ❏ Plan for data collection (tracker for example, input on graph) ❏ Calculate percentage of goals met and celebrate every time student meets goals Source: Arkansas Behavior Support Specialists
