Behavioral Instructional Priorities: TIER 2 Implementation Guide
Function: Attention
POSITIVE TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS Teacher/Student Relationship is a variable that can encourage students to be more engaged and involved in learning. According to Marzano et. al (2003) few behavior interventions will yield their intended outcomes absent positive teacher-student relationships. Positive relationships in a classroom assist in making the students feel respected and valued.
Fidelity Check: ❏ Student/Teacher Interview: Does the student know the routine in the morning (choice at door, option to pass, etc)? Can student answer affirmatively predetermined questions about teacher’s care and interest in them? Can teacher answer a set of predetermined questions about the student’s life/preferences/habits/needs? ❏ If utilizing 2x10 strategy where are data stored and is the 2x10 finished at 10 days? (At the end of 10 days, notice instances of overall classroom/student behavior, is there a change?) ❏ Outside Observer: Does the teacher consistently run this routine each morning? How do start of day routines run once students have been greeted at the door? Raymond Wlodkowski did extensive observations of student behavior, cataloguing student time in and out of seat as well as the types, instances, and severity of student disruptions. In particular, he researched a strategy called "Two-by-Ten." Here, teachers focus on their most difficult student. For two minutes each day, 10 days in a row, teachers have a personal conversation with the student about anything the student is interested in, as long as the conversation is G-rated. Wlodkowski found an 85-percent improvement in that one student's behavior. In addition, he found that the behavior of all the other students in the class improved. Implementation Example: “The Two-by-Ten Strategy” - The 2×10 strategy is simple: spend 2 minutes per day for 10 days in a row talking with an at-risk student about anything she or he wants to talk about.
Implementation Guidelines:
●
Select a strategy or a combination of strategies if you’d like Use the students first name Use a positive facial expression and genuine demeanor during your interactions Document using a calendar or data sheet so that you can hold yourself accountable for consistency Monitor for improvements in students behavior so you can measure the effect of the intervention
