SELF MONITORING An explicitly taught skill to help student be aware of and monitor their own behavior. Students are taught the expectations, system of self monitoring and are reinforced for appropriate behavior AND accurate self-reflections.

An overarching goal in education is to enable students to become independent and self sufficient, and capable of managing their own behavior without the assistance of others. Self-monitoring is a strategy used to help student monitor and manage their own behavior. Rationale: Implementation Example(s) : ● S elf Given Points : Identify and teach the expected behavior. Some examples could be on task, safe bodies, or appropriate voice levels. At random times or when a timer goes off the teacher says, “Give yourself a point if your whole table is (fill in expected behavior.” Teacher tells the student whether they agree or disagree with their assessment of their behavior. Students get points for the appropriate behavior but also being honest about their behaviors. Once students are successful being honest, this can be faded back to only being rewarded for appropriate behavior. ● Table Points: Similar to ‘self given points,’ but instead of earning points as an individual, the whole table or group earns points. ● Behavior Exit Ticket: Students fill out a behavior exit ticket at the end of the day/period/rotation that indicated whether or not they followed the behavioral expectations. If the teacher agrees with the students self assessment (whether the student was appropriate or not), the should be reinforced for their correct assessment. Things to Consider: The goal is to have students report accurately on their own behavior and realize when they were not being appropriate. Students must receive reinforcement for correctly identifying their behavior as well as for behaving appropriately. Fidelity Check: ❏ Students are able to identify what behaviors they are self monitoring. ❏ Students are able to correctly identify their behavior with at least 80% accuracy. ❏ Teachers are reinforcing appropriate behaviors and accurate self-reflections.

Implementation Guidelines:

● Identify the target behavior. ● Make sure it is observable and measurable. ● Collect baseline data ● Teach targeted behavior ● Determine which self monitoring procedure will be used. ● Teach self ● Monitor progress ● Provide positive feedback and celebrate progress ● Fade interventions student masters the targeted behavior monitoring procedure
