How to Explicitly Teach Appropriate AI Use

A simple way to communicate expectations is the stoplight model. As you prepare the lesson, think through each component and decide if AI use would be appropriate or not for each component.

Green light (AI Encouraged) AI may be used to support learning, inquiry, and revision: Some examples may include: Building background knowledge

Generating inquiry questions Clarifying historical vocabulary Brainstorming perspectives Receiving feedback on writing Preparing for discussions or debates

Yellow Light (AI with Caution) AI may be used in limited ways, with teacher guidance, required verification and attribution: Some examples may include: Summarizing historical texts

Explaining constitutional principles Brainstorming thesis statements Creating study guides Comparing AI interpretations with primary sources Drafting organizational outlines.

Red Light (AI not Allowed) AI use would replace student thinking or inaccurately demonstrate learning. Some examples may include: Writing complete DBQs or essays Completing independent source analysis Writing final assessment responses Producing civic action plans without original student work Completing independent document analysis
