Routines for Intensifying Instruction

Purpose:

The following routines increase instructional intensity in key academic skills: content knowledge, vocabulary, fluency, language development and comprehension. A CSD routines ring for PA and Phonics can be found here .

Think, Discuss, Write, Read, Share Routine

The following routine facilitates the development of:

• Concept Development • Building Background Knowledge • Negotiating Meaning • Understanding Content • Engagement and Motivation

• Academic Language • Precise Vocabulary • Oral Language • Critical Thinking

Scaffolding Opportunities

• Concept Maps • Graphic Organizers • Visuals • Multi-Media Resources • Guiding Questions • Realia

Present a big idea, essential question, visuals, or content. Students think, brainstorm, and/or complete a quick sketch of their ideas. Students discuss their ideas with a partner using an intentional academic language structure. Students write a response using the practiced academic language structure. Students read written response to a partner or small group and revise as necessary. Intentionally selected students share responses using the academic language structure.
