Access Newcomers: Multiple Modalities
Access Newcomers includes instructional routines that reflect WiDA Guiding Principles of Language Development #7: “Multilingual learners use and develop language through activities which intentionally integrate multiple modalities, including oral, written, visual, and kinesthetic modes of communication.” Multilingual Learners acquire language most efficiently when they can interact with language by reading , speaking , listening , writing , and acting out meanings. These different modalities promote language fluency, automaticity, and retention as well as prepare Multilingual Learners to use language in authentic contexts. Whenever stretch activities are considered, multiple modalities should be an instructional priority.
Access Newcomers: Program Alignment
Access Newcomers is part of the Read180 suite of programs. While the focus of Read 180 and System 44 are to master foundational reading and language skills, Access Newcomers program focus is designed specifically to assist Multilingual Learners in developing basic language proficiency while simultaneously developing academic language in English , math , science , and social studies . Because the approach of Access Newcomers is more focused on developing students’ familiarity with English as a whole, teachers follow instructional routines and follow the lessons to fidelity, taking additional time as needed for reinforcement.
