Echoing Routine
Purpose: To increase automaticity with English sounds and words, to prepare for Structured Academic Discussion, to increase conceptual knowledge of English vocabulary. _______________________________________________________________________ Echoing is Access Newcomers is an embedded routine used throughout lessons and vital to Multilingual Learners working to become familiar with the sounds of English and learn basic vocabulary. When implementing this strategy within lessons consider the following supports: 1. Preview the words in the lesson to understand challenging pronunciations and meaning, reinforcement time needed, and additional supports (ie visuals, manipulatives) required to build conceptual knowledge. 2. Pronounce the word clearly while pointing to a visual example. 3. Chunk the word into separate syllables and have students repeat each collectively. Identify difficult sounds in English (ie the āsā in pleasure). Teach correct mouth placement where necessary. 4. Invite students to echo the word collectively 2-4 times, depending on difficulty. 5. Recast incorrect pronunciations and invite students to repeat the word individually. 6. Ask several students to share the word in their heritage language until all languages in the classroom have been represented.
