Access Newcomers Universal Overview
Overview The Access Newcomers program is a multi-level standards-based program suitable for middle school and high school for beginning Multilingual Learners. It builds students’ understanding of the big ideas in English, math, science, and social studies while developing their language proficiency in English. Program Features Access Newcomers introduces 2,487 high-frequency vocabulary words, including important academic terms that will get students ready for their content-area subjects. Access Newcomers also includes: ● Word Tiles for hands-on learning ● Lesson Cards for small group instruction ● An Assessment Book to document student progress ● A CD-Rom with additional student practice ● An Assessment Folder for tracking students’ language development over the school year Access Newcomers Themes The lesson themes of Access Newcomers includes numerous topics that address essential skills for newcomers both in the school environment and the larger community. These include classroom/school vocabulary, expressions with money, greetings and social exchanges, emergency situations, medical contexts, as well as topics related specifically to core content subjects, such as addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, geography, and lab safety. These themes are ideal for acclimation to school and classroom as well as family life.
