Rigor p. 661E Conceptual Understanding: • Transitivity • Length Units and the Iteration of Length Units Procedural Skill and Fluency: • Measurement Skills Applications: • Use appropriate tools strategically. Consider the tools that are available when solving a mathematical problem, whether in a real-world or mathematical context. Choose tools that are relevant and useful to the problem at hand such as physical objects, drawings, diagrams, physical tools, technologies or mathematical tools, such as estimation or a particular strategy or algorithm. First grade students learn to choose and use appropriate tools when measuring given items including straight and curved items . Listen and look for students that exhibit the following behaviors: • identify available tools • think about correct tools to use without prompting • use tools correctly and accurately • know when to use a particular tool • decide if the results obtained using a particular tool make sense.
