Focus Strand: Mathematical Practice Standard #8 p. 391F
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Notice repetitions in mathematics when solving multiple related problems. Use observations and reasoning to find shortcuts or generalizations. Evaluate the reasonableness of intermediate results. First grade students find shortcuts involving counting groups of 10 to count ungrouped objects. Listen and look for students that exhibit the following behaviors: • notice and describe when certain calculations or steps in a procedure are repeated • generalize from examples or repeated observations • recognize and understand appropriate shortcuts • evaluate the reasonableness of intermediate results.
