1 st Grade Identifying Money Lesson Plan
Topic: M oney
90 minute Lesson
Content Standard: Standard 1.MD.5 Identify the values of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and know their comparative values. (For example, a dime is of greater value than a nickel.) Use appropriate notation to designate a coin’s value. (For example, 5 ₵ .) Math Practice Standard: 1.MP.4 Model with Mathematics. Identify the mathematical elements of a situation and create a mathematical model that shows the relationships among them. Identify important quantities in a contextual situation, use mathematical models to show the relationships of those quantities, analyze the relationships, and draw conclusions. Models may be verbal, contextual, visual, symbolic, or physical.

Learning Intention: I am learning to identify the value of coins so I can shop and use money when I get older
Success Criteria: I will know I am successful when I can pick up a coin and tell the name and value of that coin
Asessment: Teacher calls out a coin and students hold it up and then calls out a value and student again holds up the appropriate coin. Materials/Maniplulatives Needed: computer, video link, money (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters), index card with money values, place value blocks Review: Time: 5 minutes Skills as needed from prior lessons Vocabulary: Time 5 Minutes penny, nickel, dime, and quarter
