● If you say “Catch”, the student will catch the ball. They will bounce pass the ball back to you. ● To challenge your students, you can say the command after you toss the ball or have them do the opposite motion. Review how to push and catch a ball. ● To push the ball, students should hit the ball with their palms, fingers pointing up, and both hands together. ● To catch the ball, students should catch the ball with their hands only, palms facing upwards and pinkies towards each other.

Practice andPlay

Make sure each student gets a chance to push the ball to practice the skills needed for 4 square.

Debrief

Return to Home Base and ask the following: ● What was challenging about that activity? ● How comfortable are you with pushing the ball?

Prepare students for the next activity.

4Square

Show How How to Play:

● You will break students up into groups of 6-8 students and have them each at a 4 square court with one ball. ● One student per square with the extra students in line, waiting to join. ● There is a serving square(1), where the student will start the game with a serve. They will drop the ball once in their square and hit it to another square. ● The student who receives the ball must let it bounce one time before hitting it to another square. ● If the ball bounces more than once, doesn’t bounce at all, or a student hits it out of bounds(outside of the 4 square) or on a line, that student leaves the game and goes to the end of the line. ● The next student in line will join the game as the server, ensuring everyone gets a chance to serve the ball. ● When a student leaves the game, the remaining players will rotate “up” to fill the empty square. ○ If a student gets out from the square #3, a new player will step into square #1, and the student in square #2 will move up to #3. The student in square #4 will remain.
