● The goal is for the shooters to get “around the world” to the other team's side. Review the shooting form in basketball. ● With feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent, students should hold the basketball with both hands–the non-dominant hand off to the side to help balance the ball while the ball rests on the dominant hand. ● The ball should rest mainly on the fingertips while the shooting elbow is tucked under, creating a 90 degree angle. ● To shoot, students will extend the hand up towards the rim, using their legs to give them power, and follow through as if reaching into a jar on top of a high shelf. If students are quickly making shots, have them come back through the cones towards their own team after completing the first round. Return to Home Base and ask the following: ● What do you need to remember when shooting a basketball? ● What was a strategy that helped you make a basket? ● Based on how many basketball hoops you have, split students up into teams. If you have one hoop, you can split them up into five teams, putting a cone for each team along the half court line. If you have two hoops, you can have several teams per hoop. ● Spread poly spots out on the gym floor, with the majority of them in close range where more students will be successful. ● On your “Go Word”, the first student on each team will dribble the basketball to a poly spot and shoot the ball into the hoop. If they make their shot, they retrieve their ball and the spot and bring it back to their team’s cone. Students will pass the ball to the next student in line who will dribble to another spot. ● If a student misses, they will leave the poly spot and retrieve the ball for their next classmate’s turn. ● The game will end once all of the spots have been taken. Reset the game by spreading the poly spots out again, adding a few extra challenging shots. Choose four students to help model dribbling to the spot, taking a shot, taking or leaving the poly spot, and passing the ball back to the next student in line. Before releasing them back to the Home Base, have students return the basketballs back to you. Hot Spots
