Non-Examples
Conscious decision not to recognize or attend to a student who is engaged in minor disruptions (i.e., planned ignoring). Neutral, brief reminder about the expectation/rule, followed by positive feedback when the student engages in appropriate behavior.
During instruction, Sue is lightly tapping her pencil and looking around the room. The teacher stops the lesson and tells Sue to stop disrupting everyone.
During instruction, Sue is tapping her pencil and looking around the room. The teacher continues the lesson without interruption. Afterwards, the teacher quietly speaks with Sue. “Remember, we want to keep our floor clean so we can be safe. Sam, please be responsible and clean up your area.” After Sam cleans up, “Thank you Sam, for being responsible.” Reinforcement of Other Behavior Positively reinforce a student when sitting when they struggle with staying in their seat OR positively reinforce another student for being in their seat while the target student is not Incompatible Behavior Positively reinforce a student who has their hands folded in their lap instead of poking another student If a student tries to elope, give them a red card they can hold up to signal they need a break. Alternative Behavior
Withholding Attention
Redirection
“Sam, clean up.”
If Lora is out of her seat, look over to another student and say, “I wish she was more like you.” Positively praising Ravi every time he raises his hand to answer a question.
Reinforce desired or replacement behaviors while minimizing reinforcement for inappropriate behaviors.
Differential Reinforcement
Give polite, effective requests and follow pre-planned consequences. Respond in ways that promote safety, reduce agitation, and support student regulation.
“Do you think we can all clean this up together?”
