When students exhibit Intermediate Mid listening ability in French, they understand: 1. introductions, such as before an event (ex. class play, guests) 2. a short speech or presentation on a familiar topic 3. discussions about age-appropriate matters of importance (ex. attendance, behavior, an upcoming event) 4. an interview with members of the community or with famous people (ex. actors, athletes, singers) 5. a web-based presentation, such as a virtual tour 6. video presentations (ex. commercials, news, educational programs) When students exhibit Intermediate Mid writing ability in French, they can: 1. write short, simple, loosely connected texts on familiar and personal topics 2. communicate information, ideas, preferences, and opinions 3. describe people, places, daily routines, and common events 4. write requests for and provide information 5. narrate and describe primarily in the present time frame with some references to the past and future 6. use basic sentence structures and common verb forms with emerging control 7. connect simple sentences to create organized paragraphs or short compositions WRITING

1. short, non-complex texts that convey simple information 2. deal with basic personal and social topics to which the reader brings personal interest or knowledge, although some misunderstandings may occur. 3. some meaning from short connected texts that feature description and narration and deal with familiar topics.

When students exhibit Intermediate Mid speaking ability in French, they can: 1. Have simple conversations on familiar topics. 2. Exchange information, express opinions, reactions, and emotions. 3. Ask and answer questions to gain information and sustain a conversation. 4. Ask for and provide examples to clarify ideas. 5. Communicate to meet everyday needs. 6. Describe, summarize, and discuss events and experiences in present, past, and future time frames. 7. Give a presentation on a familiar topic.

END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE EXPECTATIONS ● Describe and discuss family relationships, community life, and social structures using appropriate vocabulary. ● Exchange information, express opinions, and compare family traditions and community perspectives in Francophone cultures and their own. ● Express emotions, wishes, advice, doubt, and necessity using the present subjunctive (Il faut que…, Il est important que…, Je souhaite que…, Bien que…). ● Give advice, recommendations, and commands using formal and informal af fi rmative and negative commands. ● Explain family and community responsibilities and justify opinions with supporting details and cultural comparisons. ● Present solutions to family or community challenges through paragraph-length speaking and writing using transition words (d'abord, ensuite, cependant, pourtant, en fi n). ● Use vocabulary related to family, relationships, communication, community, and social structures. ● Review and accurately use high-frequency irregular present tense verbs (être, avoir, aller, faire, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, savoir) while demonstrating appropriate register for interpersonal and presentational communication.
