Group 3 Lesson Plan: Accuracy

Focus of Instruction:

1. Reading and re-reading for accuracy 2. Practice Self Monitoring 3. Discussion with evidence where appropriate.

*Instruction is repetitive. Monitoring progress should be focused on accuracy BEFORE rate.

● Choices of text include for building accuracy include: ○ Genre passage ○ Leveled Reader (approaching, ELL, on level or beyond level) ○ Decodable text if appropriate ● First determine if the student has the applicable grade-level skills for decoding text. Look to see if the deficit is skill or self monitoring. ○ Skill- move to group 4 ○ Self monitoring- work on accuracy; group 3 or consider using the group 2 lesson plan and graph/stress accuracy rather than rate during repeated readings. ● Use this simple strategy for determining placement. ○ Say: I’m going to tap the table with my pen. When I tap the table, I want you to fix the error.” ■ If a student can fix errors when you point them out, you know he/she has the

decoding skills to read the passage, but needs assistance learning to self-monitor for accuracy. Intervene with self-monitoring strategies (group 3 or group 2, refer above). ■ If the student cannot fix errors when you point them out, a skill deficit in decoding may be indicated. to isolate patterns of difficulty, and intervene with targeted decoding strategies.
