Elementary Library

finally, we get to borrow books today! I can borrow and return a book.

Remind students how to do whole body listening.

Say: We are going to practice whole body listening by reading a book together. After we have finished the book, we will do a movement break, and then we will learn how everything in the library has a place. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE (28 minutes) Step 1: Read Aloud & Discuss Read the first story with the discussion guide. Pause story as necessary to redirect students to whole body listening and respectful participation. Step 2: Collection Tour Say: We are going to take a short tour of the library so that you can see where different kinds of books live. While we are walking around the library you must stay with the group and practice whole body listening. If you have questions, raise your hand. Kinder: Show the different sections of the library and linger on the spots they will be allowed to find books from. This should include picture books and entry level quick reads such as leveled readers and entry level nonfiction. You may want to curate a collection of kindergarten books for students to choose from instead of being free to roam the stacks. Demonstrate what to do if they take a book off of the shelf and decide they don’t want it anymore. 1st-2nd: Show the different sections of the library and spend most of the time on picture books, quick reads, and nonfiction. Define and describe picture books, quick reads, and nonfiction. You may ask students what they know about these kinds of books and clarify any responses for the group. Demonstrate what to do if they take a book off of the shelf and decide they don’t want it anymore. Step 3: Instruct to Keep Library Shelves Tidy Bring the group back to the carpet or tables. Congratulate students on their learning and express trust that they will take care of library books and keep the shelves tidy. Explain any consequences of shelves left a mess and library books put away in the wrong place. Use shelf pictures so students can see what a messy versus tidy shelf looks like. Step 4: Instruct Circulation Procedures & Routines Explain and demonstrate how to borrow library books. This includes which sections of the library they have access to, how to line up, how to carry their books, how to borrow, and what to do once they borrow a book. Show them the timers and reminders you will use to manage their time. Remind students that borrowing books is a privilege. They must take care of their books and return them on time to keep borrowing books. Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL (10 minutes) Dismiss for circulation. Kindergarten may borrow one book. 1st - 2nd grade may borrow two books. If 39 Movement break.
