Step 3: Introduce Paraphrasing Say: Another way to respect copyright is to use a strategy called paraphrasing. When we paraphrase we put ideas into our own words, make sure we include all of the important details, and that we don’t change the main message. Other words you might use for paraphrase include reword or retell. We can use this anchor chart to remember.

Let’s look at an example.
Display Paraphrase Card #1. Read outloud or allow a student to be a reader for the group.
Say: Now let’s try paraphrasing together.
Display Paraphrase Card #2. Ask students to generate ideas to paraphrase and write a paraphrase together.
Step 4: Students Practice Paraphrasing Say: It’s your turn to work with a partner paraphrasing. I will pass out a card with a sentence or paragraph that you need to read and with a partner, paraphrase. First paraphrase out loud by speaking to each other, and when you both agree you’ve got it, you can write it down. Distribute Paraphrase Task Cards and Worksheet. Use best discretion to hand out appropriately leveled cards to student pairs. Cards 1-4 are leveled at a 4th-5th grade reading level; cards 5-8 are leveled at a 3rd grade reading level; cards 9-12 are leveled at a second grade reading level. Circulate and support. Step 5: Individual Practice Say: Well done everyone. I noticed and appreciated how you were on task and trying your best. Our last activity for today is to listen to a text that I will read out loud and then individually you will paraphrase it. You will also need to include a citation at the bottom of your response. Read a very short selection from chosen nonfiction work. You may read the selection twice to help students remember details and grasp the main idea. Use a document camera to show students the text or have copies made for students to refer to. Selection should be only a few paragraphs to one page. Direct students to paraphrase worksheet and support students working on their paraphrase. Remind them to refer to the anchor chart. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES, & DISMISSAL
