Say: You can’t play that game without copying each other. It’s fun and silly! However, when it comes to our academic and creative work, copying isn’t cool. Have you ever experienced someone using your work and not giving you credit? How did it make you feel? Copying and using media without permission is actually against school rules and illegal! These actions have serious consequences like suspension and fines. OBJECTIVE (1 minutes) Say: So today we are learning how to avoid copying and appropriately use media in our own work by citing sources and paraphrasing. Say: Citing sources and paraphrasing are ways to use media while respecting copyright. Copyright is the legal protections over creative works. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE (29 minutes) Step 1: Build Citation Background Knowledge Say: Have you heard of a citation before? Let’s learn the important information about citations with a short video clip. Watch Citation for Beginners . Ask students, What are the 4 main ideas of that video? 1. ​ Plagiarism is when you take someone else’s information and try to pass it off as your own. 2. ​ To prevent plagiarism, add citations! 3. ​ Citations need to be written in a specific way. 4. ​ Use citation websites! Say: There are a few citation generators in our databases in Utah’s Online Library. These can be very handy for research but you probably won’t use them until middle school. When we write citations in the library, you need to write the title, the creator, and the page number you found the information on if it is a book. Show a citation example. Display “I can” objective.

Step 2: Brainstorm media protected by copyright Besides books and websites, what other types of media is protected by copyright? Let’s make a list on the board together.
