Step 1: Instruct students on Forensics Roles Say: Forensics means tests and techniques in investigation. In our case, it means asking specific types of questions to evaluate media. We are going to keep working with the source from our warm up. We can remember the right questions to ask by playing different roles - a robot, a detective, a judge, and an inventor. Display Robot Questions. Read through or ask for student readers. Apply to source material with student input. Display Detective Questions. Read through or ask for student readers. Alternatively, have students divide into groups of three and have each group member learn about a role and then teach the others in their group. Review findings with the whole group. Step 2: Student Partners Evaluate a Source using Forensic Roles Say: Now it’s your turn. With a partner you will be evaluating a new source using these four different roles and types of questions. You will have 15 minutes to complete the task.

Assist students finding partners. Hand out Questions graphic organizer and Source #2. Use a visual timer to help students pace themselves. Circulate and assist as students work.

Bring class back together.

Say: What did you discover? Would you trust this source? What questions helped you make that decision?

Facilitate student discussion.

Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning.
