OBJECTIVE Display objectives.

Say: Today we are learning to notice how online violence makes us feel and how it can be harmful to us. Technology and screen time can be awesome! But they can also hurt us.That’s why it is important to set limits on why and how much we use technology.

Display “I can” objective.

Say: Our objective today is: “I can avoid violent online content and set safe limits on my screen time.” Our story today is about a student who saw something terrible and it makes him feel really bad, kind of like when we see too much violence in shows and videogames and in other places online. When we read this story, imagine he witnessed this terrible thing online. This book will help us learn what to do if it happens to us. After the story we will brainstorm ways to avoid violent online content so that we don’t have to see terrible things.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Discuss

Introduce selected book and remind students of polite listening behavior and story time procedures. Use best practices while reading aloud. Read/Watch the book. Check in with students while reading about their emotions and understanding. When the story has ended, return to the stated learning objective and ask: How did witnessing the terrible thing affect Sherman? What things helped Sherman to feel better?

Allow students think and share time.

Say: Now that we know what to do if it happens, let’s discuss some safe ideas that will help us avoid stumbling on violent content online. These are limits we can set on our own technology use to keep us safe. Step 2: True or False Game Display the True or False presentation of safety limits and facilitate group discussion about each idea. You can choose to pair students so they work with a partner to generate responses and then share out, have students work in small groups at tables with individual safety ideas and then teach the class, or lead whole group discussion. Lead each new safety idea with the question, “Why/How does this help keep us safe from violence on the internet?” Ways to Be Safe Online ● Get permission to go online from your trusted adult. ● Only use online devices for a specific purpose. Avoid scrolling and clicking unknown links. ● Only go to safe websites you are familiar with. ● Turn off anything that makes you uncomfortable and tell a trusted adult. 141
