WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door and follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Say: I have the movie posters of some popular films here. When I show you the poster, silently let us know if you’ve seen it. Let’s take a poll to see which of these movies is most popular in our class. Jazz hands if you have seen (movie title). Show each poster one by one and tally how many students have seen that movie and write the number for students to see. Switch up the participation action to keep students engaged. Say: We have all seen many of these movies! Some are really fun. However, all of them have something in common. They all have different amounts of violence. This doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. Just that movie makers sometimes use violence to make stories seem exciting. There is violence in movies, websites, Tik Toks, video games. All over the internet. How would you define violence? Allow students think and answer time. Facilitate discussion to come up with a definition of violence that describes violence as any content that depicts people or animals hurting each other physically, verbally, or emotionally. Say: I think we all agree that violence is anything that shows people, characters, or animals hurting each other physically, verbally, or emotionally. When we are exposed to too much violence, we become desensitized or stop noticing it or even become more violent ourselves. It’s important to notice and avoid violence online.
