Show KWL chart. Say: This is a Know, Wonder, and Learn chart. In this column we put what we know [point to K]. Here we put what we want to know or wonder [point to W], and here we put what we learned [point to L]. Where do you think we should write or draw the new information we identify? [In the learn column]. Introduce the first book and ask the class for known knowledge about the topic. Write down students’ answers on the chart (either projected on a document camera, or create a KWL chart on poster paper or a whiteboard). Instruct students to point out new knowledge as you read. Periodically stop on pages and ask for new knowledge or wonders to add to the chart. Model writing and drawing the new information. Instruct students to use sentence frames:
● I wonder _______________ ● In this book, I learned ____________ ● I didn’t know before that ________________ ● Something I recall is _______________
Step 2: Read Aloud & Student Practice If time allows, do a movement break and read a second book. Instruct students to fill out KWL charts in pairs or individually.
Bring back the whole group.
Say: We worked together today to remember what we know on a topic and to show what we learned from a book. You were great at listening and participating. I appreciate your curiosity and willingness to learn! Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. You can extend this lesson and library learning by asking students to continue making text-to-text connections throughout reading. Dismiss for circulation. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL While checking out books to students, ask a few what new knowledge they identified today from the read aloud.
