KWL Chart Pictures of chosen topic to display
● Drop: An Adventure Through the Water Cycle by Emily Kate Moon ● Over and Under the Rainforest by Kate Messner ● Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera by Candace Fleming
WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students and prepare them for learning through opening procedures.
Place pictures around the library of your chosen topic. Ask students to silently walk around the room looking at the pictures and instruct them to make a guess about today’s lesson topic. (For example, if reading “Drop” hang up pictures of a beach and ocean, a rain cloud, a lake, etc).
Gather students and ask them what they think the book is about today.
Say: How did you know that is our topic?...Oh, so you already have some knowledge about _______. That’s great! Today we are practicing identifying the things we already know about a topic, and the new things we learn from a book.
OBJECTIVE Display objectives.
Say: That’s our learning goal today: I can identify known and new knowledge from a nonfiction text. What does identify mean? [Recall past vocabulary word] If something is known, did you learn it from a new book? If something is new, did you know it before?
Remind students how to do whole body listening while you are instructing. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Model Using KWL Chart
Say: Why is it important to recognize new information while you are reading? [answers could include, that’s how we learn, so we can know something new, so we can answer our questions] 95
