Say: Nonfiction books help us learn about the world through information or real knowledge. You can tell a book is nonfiction because it tells a story about something that is real, really happening, or has true information. Let’s identify these books. This book is… [lead students to say nonfiction, repeat until they feel comfortable saying the word.] Now let’s look at fiction books. What do you notice about these books? [Again, allow students to come closer to look] Say: Fiction books help us learn about the world through our imaginations. These books are often called fiction. These stories that haven’t really happened. The people and creatures, places, and events in the stories aren’t real. Authors and Illustrators imagined everything in the book. Let’s identify these books. This book is… [lead students to say fiction, repeat until they feel comfortable saying the word.] Your job today is to identify if a book we read together is nonfiction or fiction. Step 2: Read Aloud Introduce and read the first book. Identify the cover, title, author, and illustrator. Point out elements of fact or imagination, etc as you read.

Say: Now, how would you identify this book? Is it nonfiction or fiction? [You may use hand signals or vocal recall]. Why do you think that?

Step 3: Read Aloud Say: Let’s do another book. Pay close attention for clues if the book is nonfiction or fiction.

Read the second book. Identify the cover, title, author, and illustrator. Point out elements of fact or imagination, etc as you read.

Say: Now, how would you identify this book? Is it nonfiction or fiction? [You may use hand signals or vocal recall]

Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. Show students where they can find fiction (picture books) and nonfiction. Dismiss for circulation. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL As each student checks out a book, ask them if they chose a fiction or nonfiction book. Remember to let students know how much you enjoyed having them at the library.
